Emergence of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB)
MPB combines elements of Bossa Nova, Samba, Jazz and Folk Music, mixing rhythms and styles from different parts of Brazil.
Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) is a musical genre that emerged in Brazil in the 1960s, during a difficult time, in the midst of the 1964 Military Dictatorship. MPB combines elements from Bossa Nova, Samba, Jazz, and Folk Music, blending rhythms and styles from different parts of Brazil. The genre became a vehicle for social commentary, advocating for social justice, democracy, and the preservation of Brazil’s cultural heritage.
In the midst of these political transformations emerges Elis Regina, a Brazilian singer known for her vocal competence, musicality and stage presence, and who in the 60s became a beloved singer in the history of Brazilian music. Songs like "Águas de Março" really captivated the audience with their interpretations.
Elis Regina worked with great composers of Brazilian music, such as Belchior and Gilberto Gil, bringing great classics to life.
